Paul Schwieder grew up in Saskatchewan and now lives in Sweden. His blown glass sculptures are fluid, sensuous and organic and require countless hours of cold work, mainly with a sandblaster. Paul says this about his work:
“In sculpture, my goal is to create something alluring and magnetic, but also challenging. Can the viewer bring their own relationship with intimacy to the object in front of them?
I use various forms and colors to both enhance and diminish the properties I hope to instill in the finished object, My work deals with contrasts and opposites:
allure/deter
entice/repel
strength/fragility
transparency/opacity
By studying these contrasts, I hope to make a beautiful and beguiling object. Perhaps this piece can then nudge the viewer towards a heightened awareness of their relationships to the people and world around them.
