Quote of the Month
“I never met a color I don’t like”
– Dale Chihuly
Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Editions
Brandywine Macchia by Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Edition
It was his spirit of experimentation that led Chihuly to work with all 300 colors available in his hot shop to create the Macchia series. A close look at this new Studio Edition reveals many of those 300 colors. This piece exemplifies Dale’s passion for color. The smaller interior element extends the intimate dialogue between color and form that is at the heart of this work.
Chartreuse Persian Pair by Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Edition
"The name Persians evokes the exoticism of the Middle East with its seas of sand, the basic material of glass," observes art historian Henry Adams. This new example of Chihuly’s well-known Persian series couples his understanding of color with his organic sense of form. The sculpture’s scallops, spines and swells typifies this series.
Saffron Seaform Pair by Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Edition
The Seaform series "calls forth associations with water, marine life and movement without depicting them, and that’s why they so persuasively affect us as art," writes art critic Joan Seeman Robinson. This new Chihuly Studio Edition is a luminous and fluent example of that series.
Cinnabar Basket by Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Edition
The Cinnabar Basket is a gem of a piece. It is one of the smallest Studio Editions to date, measuring a mere 6" in height, and yet for me it has a powerful and magical presence. This piece exemplifies the elegant simplicity and classic form for which Chihuly’s Basket series is famous.
Featured Works
Dinosaur by Lino Tagliapietra
For those of you who read Holsten Galleries newsletter regularly it will come as no surprise that Lino Tagliapietra’s Dinosaur series is one of my favorites. This new piece is no exception. I love the colors which could be thought of as somewhat understated compared to some of the Maestro’s more exuberant pieces. The fluid, sinuous form typifies the elegance and vertical movement of this signature series.
Untitled by Stephen Powell
This majestic piece captures all of Powell’s mastery in color and form on a grand scale. And mastery is the only word I can conjure up to describe Stephen’s absolute control of the Murini technique which involves creating a pattern of colored glass beads and then incorporating this pattern into the hot glass.
Island Dawn by Dale Chihuly
Lithograph
This beautiful new print is the latest of Dale’s lithographs. I love the background colors which transition form ochre to bright orange. The hand painted spots of bright color in the center of the circle (inspired by Chihuly’s Nijima Float series) add a sense of playful festivity to the print.
I wish you all a happy and healthy spring and hope we can stay in touch!
