Note from Kenn Holsten

Greetings! I’m pleased to share with you this month some wonderful pieces by several of my favorite glass artists. The scheduled interview with a couple passionately involved in collecting contemporary glass art has had to be postponed until October. As always, your questions and comments are very welcome.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

"I’ve never met a color I didn’t like."

– Dale Chihuly

Featured Works:

Kookaburra by Lino Tagliapietra
I have just received some really great new Lino Tagliapietra pieces, please see them on his page. It was difficult to decide which one of these exciting new works to feature in this newsletter. I chose this stunning Kookaburra series piece mainly because I think it is one of the most striking color combinations I have seen in any of Lino Tagliapietra’s work. I also love the form and the finishing touch in the treatment at the top of the neck.

Basket Set by Preston Singletary, 10″ x 52″ x 14″

Basket Set
by Preston Singletary
Most of you are perhaps more familiar with Preston Singletary’s sculptural pieces such as the" Rattle" and "Raven" series. Preston also enjoys creating these simpler vessel forms which he calls "Baskets." As in all of Singletary’s works, we see the influence here of his native Tlingit culture. I love the way these simple but elegant designs float across the textured surface. I’m also very attracted to the rich but subdued colors. Preston has designed this grouping of Baskets to be shown together but I also have a wide variety of single Baskets available.

Untitled by Stephen Powell
There are still some great pieces available in Stephen Powell’s more "traditional" style. Actually, neither the form nor the color combination here is traditional except that this look characterized Powell’s work for many years. This piece is particularly beautiful, both in its sumptuous colors and in its graceful and sensuous form.

Savannah Cloud by Nancy Callan,
13.5″ x 18″ x 7.5″
Savannah Cloud by Nancy Callan
I have often said that one of my favorite series by Nancy Callan is her "Cloud" series. It is not an overstatement to say that "Savannah Cloud" is one of the most striking examples of this series to date. The way she has managed to integrate the curvaceous form with the serpentine cane work in such a seemingly natural way is a testimony to Nancy’s skill as a glassblower. The brilliant colors speak for themselves.

Tree in Copper Red by David Schwarz
This new piece by David Schwarz is a spectacular example of both his design sense and his expert skills as a glass artist. The organic quality of both the tree motif in the glass and the metal stand contrast vividly with the rectilinear images in the top portion of the piece. Somehow the contrast between the natural environment of Central Park and the skyscrapers of Manhattan come to my mind.

I hope you enjoyed this month’s offerings and wish you and your families good health and a pleasant autumn!
