Note from Kenn Holsten
Greetings! I know that many of you have experienced some severe winter weather in the past couple of months. I’m hoping that the selection of colorful new images I have chosen to share with you this month will brighten your day. Dinosaur by Lino Tagliapietra
This is an outstanding example from what might be Lino Tagliapietra’s best known series, the "Dinosaur" series. The orange and red hues combine with the wispy form to create the feeling of a candle flame burning in the night. The vertical movement gives this piece a very lively feeling and yet at the same time there is a majestic serenity about it.
Reeds Behind Lithograph by Dale Chihuly
This is the latest of Dale Chihuly’s limited edition prints. It draws on visual themes from two of Dale’s lesser known series of glass, the "Reeds" and the "Float" series. The red reeds are seen as a subtle back drop for the multi-colored spherical float image and all of the imagery is floating in a sea of deep blue.
Pink Moon by Alex Bernstein
I really like this new series by Alex Bernstein. The form is quite different from previous Bernstein series. I love the subtle gradation of color from deep to lighter blue and then into the lovely shade of violet. The surface cutting gives this piece a much more organic quality than it would otherwise have.
Mod Carved Top by Nancy Callan
In this piece Callan has masterfully handled the use of the traditional murine technique. The color combination of blue, green and purple murini floating on a clear background is elegant and the surface cutting adds another wonderful visual dimension.
Crescent by John Kiley
This is one of my favorite examples of the opaque series that John Kiley has been working on over the past couple of years. In many ways this piece attains, both technically and sculpturally, a level of sophistication rare in any medium. The fact that the beautiful interior colors contrast so dramatically with the crisp white of the exterior makes this piece all the more wonderful to behold.
Movement I by Latchezar Boyadjiev
In the world of cast glass, Latchezar Boyadjiev stands out as one of the all time greats. "Movement I" is an excellent example of his work. Simple in form, understated in its basic lines, this piece nonetheless attracts the eye of the viewer and engages us in a way seldom achieved by many of the large, monolithic pieces we often associate with cast glass. Less obviously figurative than many of Boyadjiev’s forms, there is still the hint of the human form here makes this piece even more dynamic.
