Holsten Galleries Note from Kenn Holsten Greetings! In the January Newsletter I mentioned the 50th anniversary of the studio glass movement and asked if any of you had begun collecting contemporary glass art prior to 1980. I was delighted to hear from so many of you that acquired your first pieces in the 1970’s. Several of you purchased pieces by such artists as Harvey Littleton, Marvin Lipofsky, Domick Labino and Dale Chihuly in that period. Many of you also asked about the history of Holsten Galleries so I thought I’d write a few lines here. The gallery opened in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1978 under the name Lightworks Gallery. In 1980 my former wife and business partner Chandra Holsten and I opened a second gallery on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida, and changed the name to Holsten Galleries at the advice of one of our artists who told us that we needed to “put our name on the door.” During the early 1980’s we had our first one-person shows of the works of Littleton, Lipofsky, Morris, Chihuly, Patti, Peiser, Myers and many others. In 1984 in Palm Beach we hosted a cameo show of the works of Lino Tagliapietra and that was the beginning of a long and enjoyable representation and friendship which I value very much. In 1990 we decided to close the Palm Beach gallery and focus entirely on the gallery in Stockbridge. In the mid-1990’s we expanded the original space there and also began participating in art shows such as SOFA, Art Palm Beach and the Los Angeles Art Show. In October of 2009 I reached an agreement with my long time friend and Co-Director Jim Schantz which enabled Jim and his wife Kim Saul (also a close personal friend and graphic designer for many of our ads) to take over the physical gallery in Stockbridge. This arrangement has worked out very well for all of us and has allowed me to continue to operate Holsten Galleries in its present form as an online gallery. This is a good time for me to say a huge “thank you” to so many of you for your support and friendship over the past 34 years! It has been a great pleasure and privilege to be part of the growth of this art form that we all love so much!
