Note from Kenn Holsten

Greetings! I hope you are all well and enjoying your summer. Santa Fe has been hot and dry and therefore it was a treat to visit cool, damp Seattle recently. Christine and I enjoyed the change in weather and environment and had a wonderful time visiting with several artists, including Lino Tagliapietra whose exhibition at the Tacoma Museum of Glass opened on July 14. We also enjoyed visiting Chihuly Garden and Glass at the Seattle Park (home of the famous Space Needle). An unexpected treat was to tour the King Tut exhibit right next door at the Pacific Science Center. I hope you enjoy the works I’ve selected to share with you this month and, as always, I welcome your comments and questions.

Bilbao by Lino Tagliapietra
This rectangular “Bilbao” is one of my favorite pieces in Lino Tagliapietra’s new exhibition at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, Maestro: Recent Works by Lino Tagliapietra. The simplicity of the form makes it the perfect canvas for the brilliant color combination. It was difficult choosing a single image to share with you here as this exhibition has many wonderful new series. In contrast to the 2008 retrospective exhibition which originated in Tacoma and traveled to major museums around the country, in this exhibition the majority of the work is from 2010-2012. The exhibition includes a total of 65 pieces from the past decade and is up until January 6, 1013. Click here to see some of my other favorite pieces from the show.

New Outdoor Sculpture
Blown Glass and Aluminum Columns
by David Bennett
David Bennett is known by many of you for his wonderful figurative sculptures which involve blowing glass into a metal framework. Over the past winter David has been working on a totally new type of outdoor sculpture in which he combines blown and cast glass elements with aluminum. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to premiere this new series here. Please go to this page to see more.

Scenes of Japan by Hiroshi Yamano
This new piece is from Hiroshi’s latest series, “Scenes of Japan.” To me this piece captures a tranquil and intimate moment in the natural world in a poignant and moving way. As always, Hiroshi’s technical mastery is quite obvious.

Double Helix Kiss by Nancy Callan
In many ways I believe that in this piece Nancy has taken her artistic expression to a new plateau. The simple elegance of the form and the light and airy white cane work against the black background bring a higher level of sophistication to her already impressive work.

Six Shadows by Dale Chihuly
Chihuly’s latest lithograph is one of my all time favorites. This print is inspired by one of Dale’s larger blown glass series, the “Ikebana.” The Ikebana is painted in metallic turquoise, blue, gold and iridescent copper and the two-color intaglio background employs large brush strokes. The “splattering” technique used in the top of the Ikebana is reminiscent of many of Dale’s original drawings..
