Note from Kenn Holsten

Greetings.  I hope that you are enjoying spring weather and that you and your families are well.  I’ve chosen some exciting new works to share with you this month. I hope that you enjoy this message and encourage you to contact me if you have any comments or questions.

Quote of the Month

“While creating each piece, I try to balance the challenges of hot glass with the sense of wonder I felt the first time I gathered from the furnace.  I believe that play is important, not only for the artist but for everyone.”

– Nancy Callan

Featured Works

Vienna
by Lino Tagliapietra
This piece is a Lino Tagliapietra classic.  The form is simple and yet elegant.  The beautiful shades of blue combine elegantly with the delicate lines of white cane. In some ways this piece is less complex than many works by the Maestro but in its very simplicity lies its greatness.

Gold Grasp by Alex Bernstein
I am very pleased to include this new cast glass sculpture by Alex Bernstein in this month’s newsletter. I love the sensual shape which is slightly suggestive of a female figure.  The gradation of color from bright gold to deep amethysts to the aqua of the interior shows a great sensitivity on the part of the artist.

Satin Lily Pad Top by Nancy Callan
This latest addition to Nancy Callan’s “Top” series is a winner!  The blue and pale green murini become very subtle due to the surface cutting, giving the impression of an underwater scene. The bold blue used in the tip and handle of the piece add a striking contrast to the understated colors of the main form.

Brandywine Macchia by Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Edition
Last month I announced the unveiling of four new 2013 Chihuly Studio Editions.   This month I am featuring my personal favorite of those four works again, the “Brandywine Macchia.”  As I said about this piece last month, it was his spirit of experimentation that led Chihuly to work with all 300 colors available in his hot shop to create the Macchia series. A close look at this new Studio Edition reveals many of those 300 colors. This piece exemplifies Dale’s passion for color. The smaller interior element extends the intimate dialogue between color and form that is at the heart of this work.
